“In early 2023, to advertise the blockbuster ‘Vermeer’ exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, the ‘Milkmaid’ was displayed everywhere in London and on the internet. It made me think of Dutch “Golden Age” genre paintings - they were demonstrations of an idealised form of every day life at the time. But what would the Milkmaid look like today, in a modern kitchen?

Enter the plastic items, the disposable coffee cup and the mobile phone recipe. The wicker basket of bread (lovely but who has the space?!) has transformed into a supermarket packaged loaf, the silver spoon into a plastic tablespoon measure, the blue of her apron into a battered denim jacket. As always, there is no medium to showcase our household objects of mass production better than pop art.”
